Thefts from Motor Vehicles

Opportunities to steal your vehicle, don’t make it easy for them.

Always double check your windows and doors are closed and locked every time you leave your vehicle, even if you are only gone for a few minutes.

Thieves will often try door handles on the off chance that they are unlocked. Set the steering lock if your vehicle is fitted with one. If not, use an individual bar type steering lock.

Consider using a gear stick lock and fitting an alarm or immobiliser if your vehicle does not have one.

Thieves often use more sophisticated methods to steal vehicles with electronic keys:

Thieves can use equipment to scan for your electronic key and create a blank key that they can use to steal your vehicle.

When not in use keep your electronic key in a security pouch, which prevents the key from being scanned by thieves.

Thieves will often burgle houses to steal vehicle keys. Keep yours safe and avoid obvious storage places such as hallways and kitchens.

If you don’t have one, consider fitting a tracking device to your vehicle to help recover it if stolen.

Parking

If you have a garage at home, use it. If you don’t, try to park in a well-lit open place.

Use public car parks that are part of the police approved ‘Park Mark’ Safer Parking Scheme.

Blue Badges

If you are unfortunate to have your Blue Badge stolen, you’ll need a Crime Number to order a replacement

A better option than the one you put in your windscreen is a Digital one.

This can be obtained from the Local authority that issues your physical one.

Traffic Wardens can access your Car details and see you

have one
